<br />
Yep, it's been a loong while since last I was here.<br />
<br />
I'm here today to let you know that I am on an extended leave of absence, more or less. Oh, things are totally fine with me -- just insanely busy, and I can't keep up with everything I want to do. I haven't been working at the torch much, but I have been working my day job a LOT. And working my beloved volunteer job at the museum, and driving back and forth to the barn (30 minutes one way!) multiple times a week, for Wren's riding lessons, and for mine, and for my eldest daughter's as well. Add in the need to clean the house at least a little, make sure dinner isn't always take-out, and have some time to run and, well, there isn't time for everything.<br />
<br />
I'm not going away forever, just for a while. Thanks for all the support over the last few years, I have really appreciated it!<br />
<br />
If you're interested in keeping up with me, I'm blogging about my life over at <a href="http://leofwynne-adventures.blogspot.com/">Adventures In Living!</a>, which is more oriented to my daily life with my family than specifically my art. Although when I make something, it will probably be written about over there. So, update your feeds and links and bookmarks, or whatever, if you're so inclined. I look forward to keeping in touch!Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-81590873093956358072012-08-17T16:55:00.001-04:002012-08-17T16:55:21.338-04:00Carving<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This is, inexplicably, what I have been doing off and on all day. Carving a lino block. I have always loved linoleum block prints, with their primitive and intricate style. Way back in the fourth or fifth grade, I remember carving one for the very first time in art class. I also remember all the safety instructions about handling the Speedball carving tools, and how you "should always cut with your free hand behind your carving hand" so as to avoid stabbing yourself when the cutter inevitably slipped. Those blocks were HARD to cut, unlike the soft rubber-ish material I am using these days. I never stabbed myself with the cutter, but I remember other kids who did.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXpaTo4qs-fbYY9OZQlxMX0fMIsPQoxkOxhD8CUaeKV9TVd8ncwN_Dj4kGqLT6vplJIihaDX8_954SI-2-tirc2ocDoEoyJ5dQiWXa5ofL5bWud68GY8b9dx8mKV6ezi2_qEhmkUNrYMo/s1600/celtic_horse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXpaTo4qs-fbYY9OZQlxMX0fMIsPQoxkOxhD8CUaeKV9TVd8ncwN_Dj4kGqLT6vplJIihaDX8_954SI-2-tirc2ocDoEoyJ5dQiWXa5ofL5bWud68GY8b9dx8mKV6ezi2_qEhmkUNrYMo/s1600/celtic_horse.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I fell in love with this image from <a href="http://pinterest.com/leofwynne/inked/">one of my Pinterest boards</a>. It comes from a site called <a href="http://typothecary.blogspot.co.uk/2009/01/illustration-celtic-animals.html">The Typothecary</a>, with other images of Celtic animals included. The origin of the image is<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Celtic-Art-Methods-Construction-Instruction/dp/0486229238/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1345233727&sr=8-1&keywords=george+bain"> Celtic Art: The Methods of Construction, by George Bain</a>. I've been searching for an image of a horse with some kind of Celtic influence for a tattoo for myself, and I found this one on Pinterest and loved it. I'm not sure if it's going to ultimately end up as my tattoo the way it is drawn now, or if I am going to modify it, but I loved this enough to want to do something with it.<br />
<br />
The other day, I treated myself to a 'real' bound journal for art journaling purposes. It's a Moleskin journal, with watercolor paper as the pages, since I knew I wanted to try some wet media in it, and haven't had much luck with other journals holding up to ink and paint that well. I'm not even sure how I came to be carving this stamp, it's just I was sitting in my sewing/crafting/artmaking area and I found a piece of carving block, and then I thought, hey, this would make a great stamp for the cover of this journal! With a soft lead pencil, I traced over all the lines of the artwork, and transferred it onto the block by burnishing it with a wooden spoon. It transferred beautifully, and then I got to work carving it. I only have two blades for my little Speedball handle -- one thin and one wide -- so it's hard to get the careful detail I want. I might have to go in search of, or order more, blades that carve a thinner line so I can get the spiral detail inside the horse without taking out too much material.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe7noyszYwj5l3AP8E1Y0sQ5i4lSNZwyy9mLiEPokQOIztKp-Uqxopn9aY-YnCzuiL7MwM-9tYxujLVA-GfQiFXJTtqjKtVngYhbU0R1UVuswHr8G9QT8wYW4OHZzkU4qU3uln07yYS5s/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe7noyszYwj5l3AP8E1Y0sQ5i4lSNZwyy9mLiEPokQOIztKp-Uqxopn9aY-YnCzuiL7MwM-9tYxujLVA-GfQiFXJTtqjKtVngYhbU0R1UVuswHr8G9QT8wYW4OHZzkU4qU3uln07yYS5s/s640/005.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There is something ridiculously meditative and addictive about carving the blocks. I sat for a long time, just following the lines with my tool, and etching out the image, once I'd decided whether to make it a positive or a negative image. And I also thought of another image to carve, too, so as soon as I can draw that one, I'll work on it. The horse is almost completely carved now, and I will find a scrap of wood in the garage to glue it to, so it's a rigid stamp, and not a floppy piece of rubber block. I will make a few test images, carve away anything that I don't want to have show up, and then print a white or gold metallic image on the front of my journal. Then we'll see what else I can put this horse on....a tshirt, maybe, or one of my thrifted denim skirts that is too boring all by itself....or maybe I will make a wall hanging...lots of possibilities.<br />
<br />
I've almost finished carving now, and I'm going to figure out where I can buy a better assortment of blades in smaller and larger sizes, so I can do the fine detail work it needs. And then, I can start printing!<br />
<br />

I hope your summer has been going well, and you've gotten to do all the things you wanted to do. I know some of you are prepping for BeadFest right now, and one of these days, I hope I get there myself! I'm still up in the air about ArtBLISS, since we now have to unexpectedly spend a huge chunk of change on a new heat pump to replace the one that attempted to set itself on fire last weekend. Boo!<br />
<br />
On the artmaking front, I have really REALLY enjoyed participating in the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/greatbigstitchedpostcardswap/">Great Big Stitched Postcard Swap</a>. I tried out some techniques I haven't used before, and made this postcard, with the swap theme of 'Discover'....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrulHi6a2z8nlNDia78Q0UA6F7fM8ZZRvYzLhOplSxO-_qazEnzWft76fKBXD2iqafoKtY6i6XCHuE6Q4CJ6modJIhZy8WhyZAVhK9hgrxxOP59U7sLIviLZuafc1CqpP4m0VCZKlIhiM/s1600/GBSPSAug2012+(3).JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrulHi6a2z8nlNDia78Q0UA6F7fM8ZZRvYzLhOplSxO-_qazEnzWft76fKBXD2iqafoKtY6i6XCHuE6Q4CJ6modJIhZy8WhyZAVhK9hgrxxOP59U7sLIviLZuafc1CqpP4m0VCZKlIhiM/s640/GBSPSAug2012+(3).JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It's built on a <a href="http://www.ctpub.com/productdetails.cfm?PC=1258">Timtex</a> base for stability, and has appliqued cotton fabric, free-motion stitching, thread tracing, rubber stamping, and acrylic paint. Since I don't have what I would call "actual painting skills", I am pretty happy with how the paint parts turned out, and thrilled with how the rest of it turned out. The back of the card is a medium-green linen, on which I wrote the following Joseph Campbell quote:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"<i>I say follow your bliss and don't be afraid and doors will open where you didn't know they were going to be.</i>"</blockquote>
I hope the recipient, in the United Kingdom, will be happy with this work. I can't wait to see what my partner has made for me!<br />
<br />
The great thing about this is that I am going to do more of it. I already have an idea that combines my glass beads with fabric and paint, so I will post pictures when I make another one. Maybe I will bind them into a kind of art journal, I don't know.<br />
<br />
I also made a new wrapped-rope bag, which I finally finished. I love it. It's my purse/tote, and I can put quite a lot of stuff in there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8y5Rt8KcAp6hyxxH1j85mlI7TzHncklAxVGZzS6au01AamxxefDeWyyoyxwyKE56vDozL3BfhNMrYCE1qCwYZdzr1tMifDOz-bRnoUfVAeLje1rcSQDXzhaADpqsAcE3BMhqUuZyfKk0/s1600/new+bag+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8y5Rt8KcAp6hyxxH1j85mlI7TzHncklAxVGZzS6au01AamxxefDeWyyoyxwyKE56vDozL3BfhNMrYCE1qCwYZdzr1tMifDOz-bRnoUfVAeLje1rcSQDXzhaADpqsAcE3BMhqUuZyfKk0/s640/new+bag+001.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
Plus, it's orange and turquoise, which has to be one of my most favorite color combinations this summer. I think I've adopted orange as my own personal color lately -- I wear it frequently, and work with it often in glass -- and putting it with turquoise just makes me happy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifnZE4vumcBqaBApFhItVlM71Ww9MmofmMTljRdf4Zl8I1RywQ5nQk_G8tt3tBrrpJ9a1pe4Lz9eFNTVDA76TLmOgHb3USfixOs4cu4k00ZjiJXhVmJxg-8Ab05SirFML1VMB5F-dA6HU/s1600/new+bag+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifnZE4vumcBqaBApFhItVlM71Ww9MmofmMTljRdf4Zl8I1RywQ5nQk_G8tt3tBrrpJ9a1pe4Lz9eFNTVDA76TLmOgHb3USfixOs4cu4k00ZjiJXhVmJxg-8Ab05SirFML1VMB5F-dA6HU/s400/new+bag+002.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
See? I wasn't kidding. Lots of stuff. My iPad, wallet, phone, a journaling notebook, and there's still lots of room left. I need to make a purse organizer because it has no interior pockets, so my phone gets lost in there pretty often. And my pen and sunglasses, too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieMFjWufuoLWW3AmKjEVY_RQyP4ilvQiY4zEUYfbYp32PQPfSzqoIQXnhm49VZJcIrw4Oh6-8MBEnJca9zgTzSVuARtZ5CtfaB2IAPALUv888VIUI-gQIKvfd2Vao15sEuVs-DrMr3gG4/s1600/new+bag+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieMFjWufuoLWW3AmKjEVY_RQyP4ilvQiY4zEUYfbYp32PQPfSzqoIQXnhm49VZJcIrw4Oh6-8MBEnJca9zgTzSVuARtZ5CtfaB2IAPALUv888VIUI-gQIKvfd2Vao15sEuVs-DrMr3gG4/s400/new+bag+003.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
I adore the fabric tassel I made with scraps from the bag itself....cut into 1/2" widths and stitched together at the top, it is a fun decoration for sure. I added one of my glass disc beads and some perle cotton.<br />
<br />
I debated shortening the tassel, but I think I like it better long. I know it will fray, and that's kind of the idea.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Below is a closer shot of the texture of the bag itself. It's made using a sort of rag-rug technique, where I wrap strips of fabric around cotton clothesline, and then spiral it into shape, stitching it down with a fairly wide zig-zag. It's fun to see the bag take shape. I learned the technique from this book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Its-Wrap-Sewing-Fabric-Baskets/dp/156477662X">It's A Wrap!</a>, and it's fairly easy. It just takes time to complete it. I've made two bags/totes like this, and I'm thinking to make at least one or two more for Christmas gifts.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0V7TI7sTcCxm6jcDHpaa84YYO0COrAOCJXWUHke-DKEdMUd2DQbxBJ9ihSJJHkqhqnd1j2g5TgqCet211WiDJZdfPRQkOabc_h0XzhIWjAPtv6nVSV57IXf-zoiJYyc-BXzAwko_2_e4/s1600/new+bag+004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0V7TI7sTcCxm6jcDHpaa84YYO0COrAOCJXWUHke-DKEdMUd2DQbxBJ9ihSJJHkqhqnd1j2g5TgqCet211WiDJZdfPRQkOabc_h0XzhIWjAPtv6nVSV57IXf-zoiJYyc-BXzAwko_2_e4/s400/new+bag+004.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5zcumKjoxlniEMWofDeBF2FpS-03dNRRL03KRk4olbECQGKOpo8ineYmXzLkw8TmmbYYGtTHEU1RjH6qWkojbro3NrU7R1QWkyDS2K1IUhLAptN_Z7OngprYKzHWgKQfRLwj_-mn9_Xs/s1600/new+bag+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5zcumKjoxlniEMWofDeBF2FpS-03dNRRL03KRk4olbECQGKOpo8ineYmXzLkw8TmmbYYGtTHEU1RjH6qWkojbro3NrU7R1QWkyDS2K1IUhLAptN_Z7OngprYKzHWgKQfRLwj_-mn9_Xs/s400/new+bag+005.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
And a shot of the purse strap, which is cotton webbing I embellished with slices of the bag fabric. It's a messy, scrappy, fraying thing, but again, that's what I was going for, so it's fine. If it frays TOO much, though, I may have to go back over it all with more stitching. So far, so good at the moment.<br />
<br />
I wish I could say I have new glasswork to show, but I haven't fired up my torch in a while. The summer's been hectic and hot, and I just haven't felt inclined to make any beads. I'm starting to get ideas, though, and I do have a show coming up in September, so as soon as the kids go back to school, I am blazing my torch up!<br />
<br />
I still need to generate the funds to buy the oxygen concentrator to run the new Bobcat. Shouldn't be too hard...there's a show in September, and another one in November, and other random opportunities for holiday sales, so I should be able to raise the $400 ballpark figure without too much trouble. :)<br />
<br />
I'm sure you've noticed a scaling-back in my posts here. I'm rethinking my business right now, and trying to figure out how much I really want to do. I know I enjoy making work for sale, and going to a few shows each year to support my glass habit and hang out with artist friends. But I haven't submitted work to magazines, nor have I spent much time in any self-promotion to increase sales or my visibility as an artist. I'm fine with that, as I have been for a while. I just can't balance it all (whew, why is that so hard to admit sometimes?).<br />
<br />
Recently, I've had an opportunity to get back into riding horses, something that is near and dear to my heart, even though I didn't really learn to ride until I was twenty. I've been off horses for twelve years, and when my middle daughter, Wren,<a href="http://leofwynne-adventures.blogspot.com/2012/03/wren-rides.html"> started riding this year</a>, I realized I really really REALLY wanted to get back to it myself. So about two months ago, I did. I've been riding once a week at the <a href="http://www.huntersridgeequestriancenter.com/">lesson barn</a> where my daughter is riding, taking lessons with Wren's instructor, and re-learning whatever I used to know about horses and riding. It's been an incredible experience, and I am so grateful to my husband, who makes it even remotely possible.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This is me, on Sail The Bay, who is usually called Sailor. He's a 17.2 hand Belgian/Thoroughbred cross gelding, and he is owned by a really nice 16 year old boy who takes lessons at the barn, too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigNiZV13zLQ71IyB92qBYD_tcemgPlPG1WK0lFLoJi9f_mnb8WMGv5_cWoIqCEEaE2-O_nbCn-bQWxyZnEGWaztqXUT4_iodxSCmOfKeTPVHpIY10Ylwl-o8qDSvDmTNgB8eOyPsV4RiE/s1600/Sailor+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigNiZV13zLQ71IyB92qBYD_tcemgPlPG1WK0lFLoJi9f_mnb8WMGv5_cWoIqCEEaE2-O_nbCn-bQWxyZnEGWaztqXUT4_iodxSCmOfKeTPVHpIY10Ylwl-o8qDSvDmTNgB8eOyPsV4RiE/s400/Sailor+002.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I really love this sweet, gentle, giant of a horse. He's tough to get and keep moving because he's so huge, but he's great for my over-40 adult rider confidence level. I can't wait til tomorrow, because I have my weekly lesson, AND I get to wear my new boots!<br />
<br />
So that's where I'm at these days. Still making stuff, and having fun. I hope your summer has been fantastic, too!Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-82616703270534615442012-07-18T12:39:00.001-04:002012-07-18T12:39:17.622-04:00Postcard Swap!It's summer. It's too hot for just about everything, including melting glass. Yes, it's true.<br />
BUT.<br />
I am suffering. I need, NEED to make some art.<br />
This is becoming a desperate situation, folks.<br />
<br />
So, I am going to give Beth Nicholl's <a href="http://dowhatyouloveforlife.com/swap/">Great Big Stitched Postcard Swap</a> a go.<br />
<br />
It's a quarterly swap of postcard-sized artwork based on a central theme. This quarter, the theme is, "<i>Discover</i>".<br />
<br />
Hmmm....so far, I'm thinking travel, childhood, searching, mysteries.....I haven't settled on what I'm going to do yet, so I am letting ideas percolate a little longer before I get started.<br />
<br />
Sometimes it's fun to do something completely different. I opted not to be involved in the latest round of the Bead Soup Blog Party, mostly because I wanted a break from making jewelry. And I do sew, and I think this will be a great way to branch out a little with my sewing/mixed-media skills.<br />
<br />
I'll post pictures when I'm done, and when I receive my partner's postcard (THAT part is so exciting! This is a totally international swap!).<br />
<br />
Until then, keep creating....and if you want to join the swap, too, click the link above, or the button on the sidebar!Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-10284973124439007192012-07-11T09:30:00.000-04:002012-07-11T09:30:17.645-04:00Forever!Good grief, it's been forever since I had anything of relative substance to say here. Not that I usually have incredible, high-level news, but still....<br />
<br />
Summer is in full swing here, which means....I have made nothing recently. Well, nothing in glass, anyway. Actually, that's not entirely true.....at the beginning of June, I made these starfish beads, which I love love love! That's CiM's Creamsicle for the starfish, on a base of a variety of transparent and opaque blues, and some curdled ivory for the sand. Used Zoozii's SSL large trio for the shape (bead is made with the largest of the wells).<br />

And I FINALLY FINALLY was able to buy my new torch! A GTT Bobcat! It's so cute! And so much tinier than I expected! Unfortunately, for now, it's still sitting in the cupboard in my laundry room/workshop. I haven't been able to purchase the oxygen concentrator I need in order to run it. Hopefully that will be a purchase for this fall. After that, I will need to figure out a way to run it without scorching the wall behind my workbench. It's bee such a long road to getting this equipment, I can't wait until I have it all together and set up.<br />

My oldest daughter finished eighth grade, and attended her first formal dance, which was exciting for both of us. She is so very beautiful, and I cried, I must admit, after I dropped her off at the dance. I think this is my most favorite picture of her that I have taken in a while.</div>

After school was out, we drove to Miami to visit my Dad. THAT was a heck of a long drive, but it was a very successful trip for us, which means TRAVELING is now a real thing we can do without losing our minds! I'm very excited by the places we can go, and I learned a lot on this trip about how to make it all go well. Lesson #1 is: Make sure the iPads are fully charged and loaded with lots of interesting games, ebooks, and other stuff.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
We used Savannah, GA, as the halfway point for the trip on the way down and the way back. I'd never been to this lovely city, and I was absolutely enchanted. My oldest wants to go to the Savannah College of Art and Design, so it was convenient to show her what college could be like in this place. The live oaks were everywhere, covered with moss hanging down, and everything was so lush and beautiful!<br />

We took a wonderful tour by horse and carriage (our horse was Batman!), and learned so many interesting tidbits about the history of Savannah and it's people. <span style="background-color: white;">There's the Savannah College of Art and Design's Welcome Center on the left.</span></div>

Amazing architecture! This building is a shop now, but used to be a stable, built by a wealthy Middle Eastern man for his Arabian horses so they wouldn't get homesick for the look of their traditional stables! I got some great detail shots of the texture of the columns, too. Henry Ford bought the building and turned it into a showroom for his 'horseless carriages'.</div>

No stop in Savannah would complete for the Girl Scouts of the family without a trip to the Juliette Gordon Low House on the corner of Bull Street and Ogelthorpe Avenue. Here we are posing at the iron gate in the garden. It's the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting in the US, and I am happy we got to visit Girl Scouting's Mecca, and take a tour of the interior of the house. We picked up commemorative pins and patches for uniforms, too.</div>

The rest of our trip was pretty uneventful, just a long ride home culminating in some wicked thunderstorms right as we crossed the Virginia border. It was so nice to be home, though, after a week away. Since then, I've been spending LOTS of time at the neighborhood pool with the little kids, for swimming lessons and general playing in the pool. My oldest has gone to her summer at her dad's, and most days, it's just me, and Wren, and Noah.<br />
<br />
There hasn't been a lot of opportunity for art-making for me so far, and frankly, since we just got through the worst heatwave I can remember, turning on the torch has not even been on the list of things I want to do. About two weeks of temperatures over 100* F with heat indices of 110 and over makes for a very unhappy HotGlassGirl. I even overwhelmed our heat pumps by baking hot dog buns one day, so running a kiln and a torch would be disastrous. Thankfully, the heat seems to have abated for the time being, but it's still too hot to melt glass.<br />
<br />
I've been sewing, though, and trying to get into art journaling. I can't seem to wrap my brain around where to start with it all! I've got a ton of supplies, but I'm at a loss as to how to get started. Anybody have any good suggestions/resources/tips/tricks??<br />
<br />
Anyway, there's the update for now. Hope all of you are having a great summer and enjoying yourself and making lots of things! 'Til next time....Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-68717886409152265502012-04-28T08:55:00.000-04:002012-04-28T08:55:20.258-04:00Countdown to Arts in The ParkFirst off, I do not like the new Blogger interface. It seems hard to use. I have a Wordpress blog, and I am thinking of switching to that platform, as are a few other people I know. Anybody use Wordpress and have some words of wisdom regarding their preference?<br />
<br />
Once again, I haven't blogged in a long time. To say that this portion of 2012 has been busy is a wild understatement. My day job has gone nuts (but recently got less nuts), and between that, the undergrad class I took, my museum training and work, my three children, and my husband, fitting in a whole lot of art-making has been incredibly difficult. Actually, impossible.<br />
<br />
I'm getting an A in my class, though, so that's good. I wrote 15 short papers for it, and got great scores on all of those, so THAT'S good. I hated every single one of the tests. It's just about over now -- one last test on Wednesday -- so that's good.<br />
<br />
Museum training is almost over! I can't believe it. The yearlong training program culminates in a self-written tour of 6 to 8 objects in the museum over 45 minutes, and my tour is May 17 at 5pm. If any of you are local and would like to come to the tour, please let me know privately. I haven't finalized the theme of the tour as yet, but given my love for Classical art, it will probably have something to do with that, at least partially. After the summer, I will take on regular touring slots each month, and I am looking forward to it!<br />
<br />
Kids...whoa....busy, busy. My oldest did not get accepted to the art program she wanted to attend, but she is going to our local high school which has a huge art program -- four full time teachers! I think she's fine with it now, after a period of mourning. Personally, I think the local school will be a better choice. The neighborhood high school is ten minutes from here, while the art program is in a school that is 40 minutes by car from here, which would have meant a ridiculously early bus stop wait. She is not a morning person. :)<br />
<br />
As for the glass....I did a commission for a friend of mine, 35 beads made into pendants with the initials "C" and "P" on them. Yes, the "C" beads are almost entirely gold aventurine. This is how much I love my friends. They were thrilled with the beads, and that made me happy, so it was worth the drama I had trying to purchase and get the lentil press delivered in time for me to make all those beads by the deadline<br />

<br />
Art-making.....well, I have been making beads and getting work ready for my show. As per usual for me, I don't do anything unless I do it at the last minute. I'm making jewelry like a crazy person, getting stressed, and trying not to totally freak out. Thanks to a very generous friend, I now have actual honest to goodness display panels for my booth, but I have yet to haul them all out of the garage and set them up so I can figure out what I need to take and how it all works. That's tomorrow's project.<br />

I've got a huge pile of copper bracelets made, and some in various stages of finishing, along with a bunch of earrings and some pendants to hang on ball chain necklaces. I really want to have more OOAK necklaces and 'statement' pieces ready, though. Not sure how that's going to work out yet, but if I don't get what I want made, well, I'm going to the show with what I have, and that's it.<br />
<br />
And now I need to study for my last test in Art History.Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-67933723068631825142012-02-10T07:34:00.003-05:002012-02-10T08:33:05.072-05:00New stuff to see!A dear friend of mine is going out of town on her first "Girls Weekend" since....forever. Kelly was in the peace Corps, and worked overseas for years with Habitat for Humanity, and made many, many friends (she also speaks fluent Romanian, which is awesome!). A few weeks ago, Kelly asked me to make bracelet and earring sets for her to give to the friends joining her on the Girls Weekend, and of course I happily obliged! Here is the end result of my imagination, some yummy colored glass, and her faith in my creative vision:<div><br /><div><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>UnMatched bracelet and coordinating earrings - bright blue glass with sterling silver</i> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><i><br /></i></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPTfIHdvnl73neYe61xPJxEZGawVR9RF7dI_pN76xJcgaSn3RMzRxgq4pc3os7jMHLGLrm0ug15NAVd9WFWdf8rL1OuYPUHpD6xo1zYw9kEEg6r_UwTMcCmOoWJH2Ke3ESm4EuWUq8nzs/s1600/004.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPTfIHdvnl73neYe61xPJxEZGawVR9RF7dI_pN76xJcgaSn3RMzRxgq4pc3os7jMHLGLrm0ug15NAVd9WFWdf8rL1OuYPUHpD6xo1zYw9kEEg6r_UwTMcCmOoWJH2Ke3ESm4EuWUq8nzs/s400/004.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5707490266770954562" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><i><br /></i></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP3ZPvFiunnZpMMbtvcpAcRjyDmW-9NxMsJsaaa1Tf5ZLwDE5eyNltA8p2KIgTWIqJU_dTGDjrkJrj3PxONd82oEvzM4WSBNX_MJxdHPVDYw0VS-E0NGiK36ZEDb6iPFeJVKEj5ULFP_A/s1600/008.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 278px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP3ZPvFiunnZpMMbtvcpAcRjyDmW-9NxMsJsaaa1Tf5ZLwDE5eyNltA8p2KIgTWIqJU_dTGDjrkJrj3PxONd82oEvzM4WSBNX_MJxdHPVDYw0VS-E0NGiK36ZEDb6iPFeJVKEj5ULFP_A/s400/008.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5707490235739886658" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>UnMatched bracelet of hot pinks and purples, with coordinating earrings - sterling silver</i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD1S9FEIDxGyoRIBVdSGrXDYMCtzs5ENLP5ElLqvm0AQOutqN9DqYIy-dJ2S8esL-Xi-HrztOWV1mgLs7fuf4ifct6D-RzEGdPcq29cAbJxNhF1n3cWoSZxwfIsh_ORHU1j660yj_1_8M/s1600/006.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD1S9FEIDxGyoRIBVdSGrXDYMCtzs5ENLP5ElLqvm0AQOutqN9DqYIy-dJ2S8esL-Xi-HrztOWV1mgLs7fuf4ifct6D-RzEGdPcq29cAbJxNhF1n3cWoSZxwfIsh_ORHU1j660yj_1_8M/s400/006.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5707490095694117394" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFS4tPbBsCU1Ik9sH-4Zal_mM19RKxY2dUHKyHx0vy3Dd7ETAd_pTRv3KzkkdAd0VpPIhhakRVAzzUUyJNeHpQzVrpRREtZCcC17PlNxwQXIQA0__tf10QNlGxrWEEowHN20Qd2sHFrTw/s1600/010.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 269px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFS4tPbBsCU1Ik9sH-4Zal_mM19RKxY2dUHKyHx0vy3Dd7ETAd_pTRv3KzkkdAd0VpPIhhakRVAzzUUyJNeHpQzVrpRREtZCcC17PlNxwQXIQA0__tf10QNlGxrWEEowHN20Qd2sHFrTw/s400/010.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5707490084609549458" /></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><i>UnMatched bracelet and coordinating earrings in bronze and amber -- in copper</i></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBmUWCpT4kSMhXOECjutnQ3pjffcIn232x0kL4I-VYVUn4zTE9nQfyNpgKrrYFHCM7nLqc3v-zZt0ZPWQ7Ix_Zme6qSsLlVQGQKJyaBX9SLMuf1pR4maHBLJHtX537dx0r0CHmDbxUOoY/s1600/016.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 272px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBmUWCpT4kSMhXOECjutnQ3pjffcIn232x0kL4I-VYVUn4zTE9nQfyNpgKrrYFHCM7nLqc3v-zZt0ZPWQ7Ix_Zme6qSsLlVQGQKJyaBX9SLMuf1pR4maHBLJHtX537dx0r0CHmDbxUOoY/s400/016.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5707490061224683074" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfao5cX13Rr-TZ7tHHvB7qYNEhGmBp8q083hP6LVDbZdydC_vQ30TxG9axzplJg9Memk8TopuyBfGy_gfHSwBWQEO8tTuIZdzdU2OBPtvmKzMuwejgcVvzXwHfL1xrZM2nWVGKEgS1hfs/s1600/014.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfao5cX13Rr-TZ7tHHvB7qYNEhGmBp8q083hP6LVDbZdydC_vQ30TxG9axzplJg9Memk8TopuyBfGy_gfHSwBWQEO8tTuIZdzdU2OBPtvmKzMuwejgcVvzXwHfL1xrZM2nWVGKEgS1hfs/s400/014.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5707490052167368370" /></a><br />I am happy to say Kelly loved the work I did for her, and *I* loved that she gave me the colors and the metals she wanted, and let me go for it. Three rows of seats, great gas mileage, excellent reviews. I really like it a lot, although I do admit to shedding a few tears for the Santa Fe. I never once had any problems -- never! -- with my Hyundai, but at 145,000 miles, time was running out on it. And we needed a car that all 5 of us could sit in comfortably. My poor teenage daughter was jammed between the little kids in their booster seats in the Santa Fe, but now she will have an entire row to herself! And I won't have to put truck tires on it -- this one takes regular car tires!</div></div><div><br /></div><div>I know all my show stuff will fit in there easily, too, so this makes me happy. I need to get leopard-print seat covers for it, though, as the interior is a VERY light tan -- not a fantastic color when you have little kids eating in the car.</div><div><br /></div><div>And there's the news for now! I didn't fall off the planet, even though it probably seems like it.<div><br /></div><div>Since Christmas, it's been a bunch of rushing here and there, getting stuff done, getting a routine back after the holidays, all that stuff. I've been enjoying my kiln thoroughly, and I've been making beads like crazy lately!</div><div><br /></div><div>See?</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj59PJdlM23gV-9I2mkiPEN_yDZYfOasWVS5_oX2EKPEkQXWRLMfAdTQKdBZPDZLD0TegfbaE8yeSm2sACTIA932n5O4yCYs8uhlkwOiE3KAIXceI8TWuqxO7B47bCHW3GMaFa5PMjQMDg/s1600/winter+stuff+003.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj59PJdlM23gV-9I2mkiPEN_yDZYfOasWVS5_oX2EKPEkQXWRLMfAdTQKdBZPDZLD0TegfbaE8yeSm2sACTIA932n5O4yCYs8uhlkwOiE3KAIXceI8TWuqxO7B47bCHW3GMaFa5PMjQMDg/s400/winter+stuff+003.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5701215616883334962" /></a><br /><div><br /></div><div>I do have a bit of (hopefully) interesting news and general stuff to share, so here we go, in bullet points for brevity:</div><div><br /></div><div>* I started an undergraduate-level class in Art History. First step on the path to graduate school and possibly a new career. So far, I LOVE it. LOVE love love. I've never been so happy to write a paper before!</div><div><br /></div><div>* My application to <a href="http://www.richmondartsinthepark.com/">Arts In The Park</a> was accepted, and I will be a vendor there for the first time this year! It's a huge two-day show at the beginning of May in Byrd Park in the city of Richmond. Maybe this will be the year I upgrade my torch!</div><div><br /></div><div>* I am working out a schedule of creating enough stock for this show -- and I'm terrified I won't have enough. Ack!</div><div><br /></div><div>* OOH!! I'm going to take <a href="http://artblissworkshops.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=72:bits-and-pieces&catid=11">a class from Richard Salley</a> this May!! ArtBliss is coming up again, and I. Am. Going. (At least in May...) I am beyond thrilled that I will finally be able to stop trying to teach myself how to rivet and solder. Mastery of those skills will. be. mine. Plus, RICHARD SALLEY. He seems so awesome, and his work is fabulous!</div><div><br /></div><div>* My oldest daughter has applied to the local arts magnet high school in visual art. I am hoping against hope she gets accepted, but I am worried her portfolio is going to be a little short. I can't get her to stop drawing dragons and mythical creatures!</div><div><br /></div><div>* I am almost done knitting the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/dr-who-scarf">Doctor Who scarf</a> I started back in November as a gift for my oldest daughter. That thing is easy-peasy, but BORRRRRING! That's what's hanging me up -- boredom. I promised myself NO new knitting projects til this one is done. I have enough UFO's of all kinds already.</div><div><br /></div><div>* This so-called "winter" is making me very unhappy. No snow, and a change to spring every three days is annoying.</div><div><br /></div><div>* I am going out on Friday night!!! (just thought I'd throw that in there)</div><div><br /></div><div>* Been playing around with baking soda as a way to make new, funky beads. I haven't totally figured it out yet (and I'm sure if I actually read something about the technique, I could master it), but so far, my experiments look pretty good.</div><div><br /></div><div>* I'm also playing around with a way to try out different color combinations using paint chip samples. Sometimes I can't decide what to make, and then I sit at the torch and make a bunch of junk. Maybe preselecting my palettes will help me branch out, and also avoid getting stuck.</div><div><br /></div><div>Hmm....I think that might be it for now. I'm NOT participating in Lori Anderson's <a href="http://lorianderson-beadsoupblogparty.blogspot.com/">Bead Soup Blog Party</a> this go-'round, and although I admit to a brief twinge of "Aw, I didn't get picked!", I'm actually relieved to not have been chosen this time. I just can't fit one more thing on my plate at this time, and I'm happy to let someone new play! I'm looking forward to the big reveal in March!</div><div><br /></div><div>Okay, I have to get to the museum and photograph some works for my paper. Glad to be back after my long break, and I hope all of you are enjoying the start of 2012!</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-49113583093209500652011-12-24T23:34:00.002-05:002011-12-24T23:37:05.158-05:00<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0Oc2z6QaOMCNQOx4s-cPCcMVrLlwd0UVYcnKMJAyAMpOcRSWYJLeXn1Ank0_VyaSXuyVIe6tej9xDrx4z_SkGsZdJXIlkj7TuM0DouVfaIGFEkP69dyFYTGYWdwwvNxlb4efonOkvfHE/s1600/Christmas2+003.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0Oc2z6QaOMCNQOx4s-cPCcMVrLlwd0UVYcnKMJAyAMpOcRSWYJLeXn1Ank0_VyaSXuyVIe6tej9xDrx4z_SkGsZdJXIlkj7TuM0DouVfaIGFEkP69dyFYTGYWdwwvNxlb4efonOkvfHE/s400/Christmas2+003.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689920045334054098" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span >Merry Christmas!</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span ><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span >My wish for all of you is a joyful, peaceful season, and a happy New Year filled with hope and love and lots of time to spend making cool things!!</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span ><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span >See you soon!</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span >XO,</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span >Christine</span></div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-34425623480171443622011-12-11T07:25:00.003-05:002011-12-11T07:50:02.161-05:00Holiday breakGood morning, friends!<div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgICQrBleX49SV4rJEcCRWTsW_QGjy_7sk6FBI2MKQS38V2iQtrhT7Ds0oq1V7jNml90wc1gtIeqMd9wCUygXjOMvNf7h8Ybbzax-RiO8lJq8CMT350Y-xynTGP3h2Kz49c5CKR2ITtgx8/s1600/002.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgICQrBleX49SV4rJEcCRWTsW_QGjy_7sk6FBI2MKQS38V2iQtrhT7Ds0oq1V7jNml90wc1gtIeqMd9wCUygXjOMvNf7h8Ybbzax-RiO8lJq8CMT350Y-xynTGP3h2Kz49c5CKR2ITtgx8/s400/002.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5684849651744686178" /></a>I know my blogging has been sparse lately....it's the time of year! The kids are all busy with activities, and I have been spending a lot of time at the museum lately, getting ready for a practice tour I had as an assignment. The tour was completed successfully, and the kids have one more week of school before Christmas break, so I am busily trying to get done all the things that need doing while the kids aren't home. And my husband completed another semester at the University of Richmond, and I am very proud of him. My youngest turned four right after Thanksgiving, so there was a party: </div><div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKyyrku2m26zlfrkkPaPdHizzsJa_KVgTl0HFwSxXc6ojgmiOWcFYb-ghPLJ4BPMdc33a7qUnh5BpVzcE40dXSekrT9y9lWm3llhcazjJTAUumazBPaA5g3WWwjYRqo5ZeQlFHTnu36KI/s1600/Noah%2527s+birthday+002.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKyyrku2m26zlfrkkPaPdHizzsJa_KVgTl0HFwSxXc6ojgmiOWcFYb-ghPLJ4BPMdc33a7qUnh5BpVzcE40dXSekrT9y9lWm3llhcazjJTAUumazBPaA5g3WWwjYRqo5ZeQlFHTnu36KI/s400/Noah%2527s+birthday+002.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5684849645599978450" /></a>And then my middle daughter turned six, and there was another party:</div><div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyR7kkEPYxrq4b2Aa_U0y2FIfuNTI3-oJMrhB8yKxO26XhgdG-4Z1tu8Jtr9NBn_Qde4UrWEESDl23lB0APehsOiaqVtNWSP0SWNUb902nAfwO0uEAcqhpUFKTC8RHyK4yDWdSgmchYmU/s1600/003.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyR7kkEPYxrq4b2Aa_U0y2FIfuNTI3-oJMrhB8yKxO26XhgdG-4Z1tu8Jtr9NBn_Qde4UrWEESDl23lB0APehsOiaqVtNWSP0SWNUb902nAfwO0uEAcqhpUFKTC8RHyK4yDWdSgmchYmU/s400/003.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5684849626722028066" /></a>My oldest tested for, and received, her green belt in Tae Kwon Do this weekend, too.</div><div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvQGS1aknrv2VwQthyYqgzapvdxGTXY7ItS8aNvNRHiHwk3tdJySp54wsSXl7u8FamVbrSZ17CGZ8r4IDBFcS5nqCfsAeEHuNofM1x-b7bEBLZyMoSgebi32irr7llJwGs9C6k1OAms1E/s1600/023.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvQGS1aknrv2VwQthyYqgzapvdxGTXY7ItS8aNvNRHiHwk3tdJySp54wsSXl7u8FamVbrSZ17CGZ8r4IDBFcS5nqCfsAeEHuNofM1x-b7bEBLZyMoSgebi32irr7llJwGs9C6k1OAms1E/s400/023.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5684849623351453330" /></a>The period between Halloween and New Year's Day is a ridiculously crazy, family-event and holiday-filled time that always simultaneously makes me feel so good about all that I can do for my family, but also sucks the creative juice right out of me. <a href="http://studiomothers.com/2011/12/01/christine-advance-and-retreat/">I wrote about it in a post on the Studio Mothers blog the other day.</a><br /><br /><div>The kiln is still awesome. I can't believe the beads I can make now! Discs, and huge hollows, and beads with parts that stick out....all kinds of stuff that needs immediate heat and careful cooling after working. I promise to return as soon as I can with pictures of new beads and other fun stuff. Until then, I hope everyone enjoys a fabulous holiday season, and best wishes for a terrific 2012!</div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-24899237843835395272011-11-28T11:59:00.004-05:002011-11-28T12:13:28.380-05:00Guess what I'm doing....<div><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinHCZkt0pBRMlmumqxyxt0eoYAUmDhEMM2G7APkefxCPc_i3YfJASeN79tbx_wAsqMavFzi-30dlZTqM-G_8v-WVSaCYDmfaEwjIO5XEUMraDKOiVdS_3QbJkgms0yl_zKuSsaz_RU1cA/s1600/003.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinHCZkt0pBRMlmumqxyxt0eoYAUmDhEMM2G7APkefxCPc_i3YfJASeN79tbx_wAsqMavFzi-30dlZTqM-G_8v-WVSaCYDmfaEwjIO5XEUMraDKOiVdS_3QbJkgms0yl_zKuSsaz_RU1cA/s400/003.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5680092774144987650" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px; " /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS9cOrw693YoFlI8H515SejRhel8I6c5y6Ova1BM6Pz2c6JZkVJSgVKCon9X9DQTqCiK_xZi-u9dA35qH4pM6ysKFkrTpKIq4VJHYzimzUWGFoJAR0rGx2cr5HeCFS28Q4noTgTdKuZ4Q/s1600/004.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS9cOrw693YoFlI8H515SejRhel8I6c5y6Ova1BM6Pz2c6JZkVJSgVKCon9X9DQTqCiK_xZi-u9dA35qH4pM6ysKFkrTpKIq4VJHYzimzUWGFoJAR0rGx2cr5HeCFS28Q4noTgTdKuZ4Q/s400/004.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5680092769946525682" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px; " /></a><br />I am running my new kiln!!<div><br /></div><div>So far, so good. I've never had a kiln with an electronic controller before, and the annealing cycle is programmed in it already....so there's a lot of anxious running back and forth while I watch the temps go up and down and try to figure out at what point in the cycle we're at. I wish I could turn on my torch, too, and make some beads, but my son (who's 4) is home with me. Not a good idea to play with fire while little ones are around. But the custody schedule with my older daughter has her needing to be at her dad's by 2pm on Thanksgiving Day every year. We didn't want to miss having her join us for a holiday celebration, so we just have our big dinner on the night before! Then we can all watch the Macy's parade on TV the next morning and eat leftover pumpkin pie for breakfast. We've been doing this for years and it works out perfectly! </div></div><div><br /></div><div>Mmmm....pumpkin pie....I think there's still some in the fridge.....</div><div><br /></div><div>I hope, if you celebrate Thanksgiving, that your celebration was a fun and relaxing one. Exhausting, but awesome. My son (3) and my middle daughter (5) did not know they were going on this trip (my 13yo daughter did), so it was a fun surprise for them. Of course, we had hoped for a more enthusiastic reaction than we got when we told them where we were going, but we did drag them out of bed at 4am for our flight, so I guess you can't expect too much energy by 10am.</div><div><br /></div><div>Cinderella's Castle was absolutely breathtaking at night, all lit for Christmas. It was fantastic. The kids had a great time, and I loved seeing them see all my favorite things for the first time. My older daughter and I got in our 'missions' -- to ride Space Mountain and The Haunted Mansion each at least once. My son seemed to enjoy rides that were outside, but it was hard to capture him smiling. Disney World is a lot of noise and sights and commotion, and I think he was overwhelmed by it all. We don't visit amusement parks and ride on rides as a general rule, so this was his first experience with anything like this. It was beautiful to see him smile SO much on the Flying Dumbo and Aladdin's Magic Carpet rides, though.</div><div><br /></div><div>I'm already planning our next trip, in three years. I love love LOVE the Disney Parks, especially the Magic Kingdom.</div><div><br /></div><div>Let's see.....what else....</div><div><br /></div><div>Still training at the museum. Still loving it. I did my first couple of practice gallery talks already, scored well on them, and had a ton of fun. Last session, we were shown how to use the library at the museum (dangerous for me!), and I am so excited to get in there and do some research for my upcoming three-object "tour" in December.</div><div><br /></div><div>I'm done with shows for the season. Yay! Now to make a ton of inventory for a huge local spring show that I am applying to.</div><div><br /></div><div>My kiln has not yet made an appearance. Boo! Some parts were back-ordered, so I hope to get it later this week.</div><div><br /></div><div>In case you didn't see this on Facebook, I scored BIG at an estate sale a few weeks ago. The estate was apparently the home of a hobby jewelry maker who managed to own materials for just about every craft or art I like. There were shelves of jewelry books -- most brand-new -- and at $5 each, I was pulling them off the shelf in handfuls. I got a <a href="http://pepetools.com/jump-ring-maker.html">Pepe jump ring winder</a> for about $45, sheet metal, wire (gold filled, sterling, brass, and copper), hand tools, <a href="http://www.beaducation.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1963">a texture hammer (for $8)</a>, and a bunch of other stuff. Someone was definitely looking out for me, because most of what I got were tools and things I have had on my wish list for a long time. It was insane how little I ended up paying for a lot of this, and the only conclusion I can draw is that I was meant to have it. I am sure the previous owner of this equipment would be happy to know that it went to a jewelry artisan and metalsmith. </div><div><br /></div><div>Now if only I could carve out some time to play with everything...that would be fantastic. </div><div><br /></div><div>Oh, and because I don't do *enough*, I'm also trying to teach myself to crochet so I can make <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/77751829/pdf-crochet-pattern-for-fox-scarf-animal">this scarf.</a> How insanely cool is that!? I love that scarf, and I want one. So I will (hopefully) make one, before the weather turns warm again.</div><div><br /></div><div>My tea is hot, and my to-do list is sizeable, so I guess I should get going. See you real soon! ;)</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-66192588074199504552011-10-22T08:38:00.004-04:002011-10-22T09:19:46.024-04:00New work!I haven't been <i>totally</i> without time to create....<br /><div><br />For your viewing pleasure, behold a bracelet made from the headpins I mentioned in my last post:<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijod8rfgpkuFC26jWcfdSZYWKm0cZfHFwWC49RPR6r9hCcY2NH0ZozJaxpGv2pkmfNwy32NAaQ-5DV3mDnHSSI_bheH9UQwAFJmf-KD12Lzyd4OJs_2st830a3vIf6QSv3AHAhG2C-7RM/s1600/028.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijod8rfgpkuFC26jWcfdSZYWKm0cZfHFwWC49RPR6r9hCcY2NH0ZozJaxpGv2pkmfNwy32NAaQ-5DV3mDnHSSI_bheH9UQwAFJmf-KD12Lzyd4OJs_2st830a3vIf6QSv3AHAhG2C-7RM/s400/028.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666300290715307426" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGGwaPzZco1DCkua7HyalLjwX5gTsn_gyx_XdL5ImsC-h-Dt6Fo2lUqIeACO9p4OwoV4wWRJyE0uHJ1xJMrIOE_yoypuBzXz8UV3tGQLVbFtHtM3NQrkuXC0Pq6EmEMm-pknH81kZT_2g/s1600/025.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGGwaPzZco1DCkua7HyalLjwX5gTsn_gyx_XdL5ImsC-h-Dt6Fo2lUqIeACO9p4OwoV4wWRJyE0uHJ1xJMrIOE_yoypuBzXz8UV3tGQLVbFtHtM3NQrkuXC0Pq6EmEMm-pknH81kZT_2g/s400/025.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666300282927360018" /></a><br /><div>And made from a recent estate sale find, this necklace, called 'Relic', from my own copper tube beads and vintage glass and metal beads, mixed with my own lampwork:<div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxLSPEOH9K0Dle7wYfH0N0Xm7Cn_AW0Td_FoKNizvZlHEzv1VCOw4UQHMzmTW0HcCcLG8UNm6-aTwRLpoADMqFQaIa7n36vpm5oNtyJiwzqCp3OuO5trPfg3UfYhCUoUkX3Y1geuz3mg8/s1600/016.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxLSPEOH9K0Dle7wYfH0N0Xm7Cn_AW0Td_FoKNizvZlHEzv1VCOw4UQHMzmTW0HcCcLG8UNm6-aTwRLpoADMqFQaIa7n36vpm5oNtyJiwzqCp3OuO5trPfg3UfYhCUoUkX3Y1geuz3mg8/s400/016.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666300315637696162" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px; " /></a>And the matching bracelet:</div><div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEFlTzEG3EZ-PLAkFZQy3_uwzwcE1I7HEbYPgXOpkJEZsnuGXBHZA22n9BYBIjDtVsFlNSvHNqzmNB9t1tDTSKDBXx4-QtnRnfZKcOqupFaSGGV6hSlQTOXs23XGFnHiJzm_B7JUCZnk4/s1600/010.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEFlTzEG3EZ-PLAkFZQy3_uwzwcE1I7HEbYPgXOpkJEZsnuGXBHZA22n9BYBIjDtVsFlNSvHNqzmNB9t1tDTSKDBXx4-QtnRnfZKcOqupFaSGGV6hSlQTOXs23XGFnHiJzm_B7JUCZnk4/s400/010.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666300305492255730" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px; " /></a>Some heavy-gauge copper wire -- working on my hammering and shaping skills. </div><div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijcSbDQl85pEnby7I1gmyt1kPFu3-A8diZjHan3FVzYZxY0eqvYHG74KPCpJsAoZEcizEbu_5AiwjSWdBP-QtLHY81ftXyIfzD0ewdLqRqD2_hxdXXz4lbrQHshLFlBL9OZFz6C38Zu1k/s1600/008.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijcSbDQl85pEnby7I1gmyt1kPFu3-A8diZjHan3FVzYZxY0eqvYHG74KPCpJsAoZEcizEbu_5AiwjSWdBP-QtLHY81ftXyIfzD0ewdLqRqD2_hxdXXz4lbrQHshLFlBL9OZFz6C38Zu1k/s400/008.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666300302221858082" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px; " /></a></div></div><div>I especially love that fall leaves bracelet. In my hurry to get the <a href="http://www.ahotpieceofglass.com/2011/10/quickie-new-work-post.html">headpins</a> annealed (it's a BIG fistful of headpins now -- I made even more!) so I could make something with them before the autumn was over, I shoved them all into the kiln, along with the cool ivory-black-olive dot beads and the teeny tiny hedgehog and fired them all up.<div><br /></div><div>They're annealing as we speak.</div><div><br /></div><div>My little <a href="http://www.debmark.com/Kilns/Evenheat/hotbox.shtml">Evenheat HotBox kiln</a> is probably batch annealing in my garage for the very last time.</div><div><br /></div><div>...</div><div>....</div><div>.....</div><div><br /></div><div>WOOHOOO!!!!!!!</div><div><br /></div><div>Why am I so excited about this?</div><div><br /></div><div>Because on or before November 1st, <a href="http://theglasshive.com/">The Glass Hive</a> will be shipping me my new kiln! </div><div><br /></div><div>I ordered <a href="http://theglasshive.com/BEADANNEALERS.html">a Wide Guy kiln</a> way back in February of 2010. Yes, a year and a half ago. The Glass Hive has a fantastic layaway program, which I took advantage of, since putting together the entirety of the cash for the purchase was going to be difficult. With my last show, I finally was able to make the last payment, and now my kiln is being built!</div><div><br /></div><div>No more babysitting the kiln. No more running out to the garage to check the temp and make minute adjustments with the infinite controller. No more being bound to the house while the kiln runs. No more waiting for a full bowl of beads to be made, and then trying to find a day when I don't have to go anywhere so I can run the annealing cycle.</div><div><br /></div><div>No more making fabulous beads, and then not being able to use them right away.</div><div><br /></div><div>Oh my goodness, I'm so excited! Of course, I have to figure out the logistics of where to put the kiln and my torch stuff so I can work and put beads directly into the kiln, but that's minor. :)</div><div><br /></div><div>Soon....soon....I can hardly imagine what it will be like to fire up the kiln, fire up the torch, make my beads, put them directly into the kiln, and let the kiln complete it's cycle with no intervention from me, and then stop all by itself. Beads will be ready the next day, no more waiting.</div><div><br /></div><div>Can you tell I'm thrilled!?</div><div><br /></div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-44247145062356327632011-10-06T09:09:00.007-04:002011-10-06T16:33:37.631-04:00Wedding jewelry and other stuffI don't know if you are familiar with <a href="http://flockshop.com/">FlockShop</a>, which is Interweave's new shop. They sell great craft and art supplies at a discount, sort of like <a href="http://www.woot.com/">Woot</a> or <a href="http://1saleaday.com/">1-Sale-A-Day</a>, if you're familiar with that format.<div><br /></div><div>Anyway, because I received so many wonderful comments about my use of fiber in making my Bead Soup challenge piece this year, I decided to give fiber a try for some other works. Thankfully, this amber and purple glass is pretty stable. Kelly picked up the work last night, and I think she liked the pieces I made. They are much more sparkly than these photos do justice to, and of course, I was so happy to be a part of Kelly's wedding celebration! Thank you Kelly, and congratulations!!<div><br /></div><div>In museum news, I have been studying Rococo painting like a crazy person these last few days, preparing for my first gallery talk. I'm speaking on Giovanni Pittoni's 1720 painting, 'The Banquet of Cleopatra', and I'm scared. I am a confident teacher, capable of teaching a wide range of subjects, but this really makes me nervous. It'll be okay, I know, but still.</div><div><br /></div><div>There's a stack of art history books on my kitchen island about a foot high. I'm reading. A lot. I'm back.<br /><div><br /></div><div>I know it's Bead Table Wednesday, so quickly, here is a shot of my ever-crowded bead table (jewelry table, wire table, sewing table, mixed media table....):</div><div><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHvjggNOS9JWZxJjramL_xlJPTEHHdx-LCOh3H0_XmL3wstD5okb7gT1bin4YOLz9jY8xl_uDTOXSx-8pskqimvag6ZSY5MY78thiznPPQCky4kVOWxwWShfyLp6vXWSktFEvSc52rdIU/s1600/004.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHvjggNOS9JWZxJjramL_xlJPTEHHdx-LCOh3H0_XmL3wstD5okb7gT1bin4YOLz9jY8xl_uDTOXSx-8pskqimvag6ZSY5MY78thiznPPQCky4kVOWxwWShfyLp6vXWSktFEvSc52rdIU/s400/004.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657390997956285154" /></a><br /><div>What? Doesn't everyone sew and work metal and make jewelry on their ironing board??</div><div><br /></div><div>The bathroom remodel this summer has rendered the garage workbench a little inaccessible for the moment, and I haven't had time to clean it off as yet, so that is why some of my metals stuff is in front of my (poor neglected) sewing machine.</div><div><br /></div><div>But BTW is not what this post is about....no.</div><div><br /></div><div>Most of you know that I was accepted into the training program to become a docent at the <a href="http://www.vmfa.state.va.us/Default.aspx">Virginia Museum of Fine Arts</a>. It is a prestigious and comprehensive training program that lasts a whole year, and includes art history lectures, gallery exercises, training in basic museum education, and programs on the collections and holdings in the museum. It's a volunteer position, and I am undergoing this extensive training willingly, and without financial compensation. The rewards are much greater than that for me.</div><div><br /></div><div>So far, we are three weeks into the training, and have completed lectures on ancient art and the ancient art collection in the museum. To say that I am happy is an understatement. </div><div><br /></div><div>The first week, we were allowed into a gallery with our instructor and a security guard after the museum was closed. It was quiet and cool, and the halls were lit and the marble gleamed and outside it was dusk. It's an amazing experience to be so quietly surrounded by works of art created by countless hands and minds from across the centuries -- and millennia. All those people and all that creating....people we can identify and have images of, and people we only know as "the Virginia painter" or "R", or people we have no idea about at all, whose identities are lost in the passage of time. I was overwhelmed by the existence of these people and what they have left behind, by the magnitude of what we do creatively as humans, and by the seeming enormity of the task before me.</div><div><br /></div><div>But now I see why it is that this appeals to me. Oh, it always has, the history and the concept of a museum, and the reading and learning. But for the first time in....years?....I sincerely feel that <i>this is what I'm meant to be doing</i>.</div><div><br /></div><div>On some levels, it's intensely frightening.</div><div><br /></div><div>On another level, it fills me with a joy I can't describe, and that has spilled over into the rest of my life in these last few weeks. Even in the midst of the chaos of three children starting school, husband in college, and work and family life activities. '<i>Go placidly amidst the noise and haste' </i>has never been so applicable to my days.</div><div><br /></div><div>I have a couple of years to spend working at the museum in this capacity, but my mind has already started to wander to "what's next?" as I find myself idly surfing the course listings for Virginia Commonwealth University's Art History department. </div><div><br /></div><div>We'll see; I have plenty to do and to think about before I go get all fired up about any further schooling for myself. But for now, I'm happy to be doing what I'm doing, and looking forward to the future eagerly.</div><div><br /></div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-84083095446689878702011-09-21T07:37:00.009-04:002011-09-23T12:46:56.463-04:00Still Hoppin'!Wow! What an amazing Bead Soup party this time! So many beautiful works, so very many blogs to visit! I'm still working my way through all of the blogs on the list, and I have a feeling it's going to take a few more days at least. Wow, you guys are seriously talented!!<br /><div><div><p></p><p class="MsoNormal">And thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you who left such lovely comments on my work! Knowing how many blogs there are to visit, it really means a lot that you would stop and offer kind words about my necklace. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!</p><p class="MsoNormal">To any of you who are newly subscribed to this blog -- welcome! Now that the kids have started back to school, and September's whirlwind is settling down, I hope to have more content posted here, as well as on my other blogs, The Medieval Glassworker, and The ScooterMom!</p><p class="MsoNormal">Enough housekeeping and business...how about some news and pictures?<o:p></o:p></p><div><br /></div><div>So....here is what I've been up to lately....aside from cooking up the Bead Soup!</div><div><br /></div><div>I helped a friend who needed a funny baby gift...and made a baby bottle into a ketchup bottle:<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjgKqv1OIPXEZjcsOCRx95LaEtlmpWBbijNeonn2TwbHDqDWqD6q77OVXi2JKZfegFfs31InLNCii5bzqErENn9D8xzrr_Fg0a5Zgeqiabz7lW6y6mPY_UZTYtF2I0B9t78dCYIj1QrGk/s1600/Ketchup+baby+bottle%2521+001.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjgKqv1OIPXEZjcsOCRx95LaEtlmpWBbijNeonn2TwbHDqDWqD6q77OVXi2JKZfegFfs31InLNCii5bzqErENn9D8xzrr_Fg0a5Zgeqiabz7lW6y6mPY_UZTYtF2I0B9t78dCYIj1QrGk/s400/Ketchup+baby+bottle%2521+001.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5654843747497795330" style="float: left; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; cursor: pointer; width: 267px; height: 400px; " /></a><br /><br />It was pretty simple, but I was impressed with myself when it came out actually sorta looking like the real thing!</div><div><br /></div><div>It's not designed to be functional, just purely a joke between friends.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>The school-year schedule is in full swing around here with activities just about every night for someone in this house -- tae kwon do, Girl Scouts, my husband has two night classes....it's crazy, but we're handling it. Oh, and my night of training at the museum. Now THAT is something I am really in love with. That's a whole separate post of it's own, though. More later.</div><div><br /></div><div>Remember these vintage suitcases I bought last spring?</div></div></div><div><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAh1lC0dIoPAnqayH-pj-B-vOdqwV6kIEXUpraPOejYlof3R7YnR9RmP92mzp9wpZ6MZ6T09UM2-4Jq-jSrLZfyfofGsNKKJ6E7khumU1A9y-Ms5H0OmIAbHKUloL9tApffLopMuvKMLY/s1600/Spring%2521+046.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAh1lC0dIoPAnqayH-pj-B-vOdqwV6kIEXUpraPOejYlof3R7YnR9RmP92mzp9wpZ6MZ6T09UM2-4Jq-jSrLZfyfofGsNKKJ6E7khumU1A9y-Ms5H0OmIAbHKUloL9tApffLopMuvKMLY/s400/Spring%2521+046.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5655516836081742962" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px; " /></a><br /><div><div><div>I thought they'd be great for a tabletop show display -- and they are -- but there is so much neutral in my display that nothing really stood out. I'll have some good photos of my display after this weekend. I've changed it quite a bit, and I'm really pleased with the way it has turned out. One of the very best things about using working suitcases as display props? Storage! Those things are FULL of all the little props I use on my tables. It makes for fast and easy setup at shows, too, which is fabulous, since I am always alone at shows for setup.</div><div><br /></div><div>Hmm...what else?</div><div><br /></div><div>I've been so busy, but haven't had a chance to photograph anything really interesting...guess this means I need to be running off to get started on prep for my busy weekend. I'm not going to <a href="http://artblissworkshops.com/">ArtBliss </a>this year (boohoo!), instead I am helping out with <a href="http://coronation.atlantia.sca.org/index.php">a local SCA event</a>, and then on Sunday is <a href="http://www.uronline.net/site/c.jtJQJ6MVIwE/b.2025175/k.5C0F/Arts_Around_the_Lake.htm">Arts Around The Lake at the University of Richmond</a>. I doubt the arts will actually be around the lake this year, since it's supposed to be rainy, but I am hopeful. Come out to see me and a bunch of other fine artists and artisans, if you're local to Richmond, VA!</div><div><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: left; "><span class="Apple-style-span"><p class="MsoNormal"></p></span></div></div></div></div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-1019536633864700812011-09-17T13:43:00.005-04:002011-09-17T14:23:17.408-04:00Ta - DAAAA!!!!As my contribution to the <a href="http://www.prettythingsblog.com/2011/02/welcome-to-bead-soup-blog-party.html">Bead Soup Blog Party</a> 2011, I give you...<div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Washed Ashore</i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i><br /></i></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM5HtjaHWtgzDB82V0QOHUAYdohgvm1EcuaTgPwFl7X6Kn-cSG-4OKkf1axjJUSNtksF3KGrsPdyQDFBmQw3ZTpMFs-q7f6ZHxXA0wByvT9JmooAXaUyp5VemM2jiHHIRktBYBhsilxzk/s1600/BSBP+2011+full.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM5HtjaHWtgzDB82V0QOHUAYdohgvm1EcuaTgPwFl7X6Kn-cSG-4OKkf1axjJUSNtksF3KGrsPdyQDFBmQw3ZTpMFs-q7f6ZHxXA0wByvT9JmooAXaUyp5VemM2jiHHIRktBYBhsilxzk/s400/BSBP+2011+full.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653392016221317522" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW_eJBg8LxnyVb8g7vRqs6Oo-knlxTGCiCwihHLL5R7RS-gnK6moTbbWvfb4JeX_rfIO6zZ2UfglLzSunFfxZ2OKUNcG1ePuIjMKxI0irW6GURLxXpF57AYEVpLtKwjUYlrtba0jtLeks/s1600/BSBP+2011+Washed+Ashore+focal.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW_eJBg8LxnyVb8g7vRqs6Oo-knlxTGCiCwihHLL5R7RS-gnK6moTbbWvfb4JeX_rfIO6zZ2UfglLzSunFfxZ2OKUNcG1ePuIjMKxI0irW6GURLxXpF57AYEVpLtKwjUYlrtba0jtLeks/s400/BSBP+2011+Washed+Ashore+focal.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653392007858702850" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_Gn43mQNk42XFq5Ih9eJH0EoEhALaJd2aridytQYT8ZHTImBFAze-Uq0lfaJR1OnylQECn7Zu1r9dOc-gp3tNHSn1W_7CSm3D8gwkyJgNPzXYubN-AwhO9KYsLSYhzehlmCxJ5UDc8uk/s1600/BSBP+2011+detail2.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_Gn43mQNk42XFq5Ih9eJH0EoEhALaJd2aridytQYT8ZHTImBFAze-Uq0lfaJR1OnylQECn7Zu1r9dOc-gp3tNHSn1W_7CSm3D8gwkyJgNPzXYubN-AwhO9KYsLSYhzehlmCxJ5UDc8uk/s400/BSBP+2011+detail2.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653392003599633874" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4ziJTJKDJc-xC4BvJHqma2fRbL5XDg9171lkEWZRb3VjKZ8JQgX6ZFj8M9qPAGWH5_QdV3xf7oscO0BZoFDUrlcPQWPC-LUFCN-FUnr9wnAWIVNXj-r0bpERBtgPdOq1fcUO4I8TsVzI/s1600/BSBP+2011+detail1.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 261px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4ziJTJKDJc-xC4BvJHqma2fRbL5XDg9171lkEWZRb3VjKZ8JQgX6ZFj8M9qPAGWH5_QdV3xf7oscO0BZoFDUrlcPQWPC-LUFCN-FUnr9wnAWIVNXj-r0bpERBtgPdOq1fcUO4I8TsVzI/s400/BSBP+2011+detail1.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653392002033175762" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyfkMTPMMSM5HaOALg1_kGRPwDcqjK0VfAH1JmUFm2TeUk-WsFO0dEOsM9ytt_R8GkLRhgZ8PmeU-5u3ylt3kTpAmuy9UOAdbzI4G-Cvf2uMpWO49zKizPYHMgL1v3zVimK9nLigIUDE8/s1600/BSBP+2011+Clasp.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 249px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyfkMTPMMSM5HaOALg1_kGRPwDcqjK0VfAH1JmUFm2TeUk-WsFO0dEOsM9ytt_R8GkLRhgZ8PmeU-5u3ylt3kTpAmuy9UOAdbzI4G-Cvf2uMpWO49zKizPYHMgL1v3zVimK9nLigIUDE8/s400/BSBP+2011+Clasp.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5653391996130651954" /></a><br /><div>While I admit to being a class-A procrastinator sometimes, this particular project sparked ideas immediately upon receiving the bead soup. For a few weeks, I toyed around with a variety of ideas, auditioning countless methods for achieving the end product I had in mind. Finally, FINALLY, late on Wednesday evening, the week of the Hop, I came to grips with exactly how I was going to execute this design.<br /><div><br /></div></div><div>It was a challenge. I never use fiber in my designs hardly anymore. But I knew I wanted a look of something tossed up on the shore of a beach after a storm (fitting, given the recent hurricane here). I think I achieved it.</div><div><br /></div><div>So, after you have enjoyed my post, please go and visit my partner, Elizabeth Woodford, and see the <a href="http://elizabethcreates.blogspot.com/2011/09/soups-on-my-bead-soup-creation-big.html">beautiful necklace and earrings she created</a> with the soup I sent her!</div><div><br /></div><div>And then, after you've done that, start making your way around the Hop and check out ALL the fabulous work! <br /></div><div>A company called <a href="http://www.riggsdistler.com/Services/Storm-Restoration.aspx">Riggs-Distler</a> was assigned to work in my neighborhood on Thursday afternoon. The really nice work crew walked around and reset transformers and inspected lines for an hour or so, while the kids played in the sprinkler on the front lawn (because the generator was occupying the backyard).</div><div>
<br /></div><div>I ventured forth to inquire of these gentlemen what we might expect in terms of restoration, and one of the guys said, "Oh there's nothing broken here. Just a couple of limbs on lines. Should take four or five hours, max."</div><div>
<br /></div><div>I refused to get my hopes up too high, because we'd been having them raised and dashed over and over again. We had to go and find some dinner and take Wren to her kindergarten orientation, so really, it was best to just proceed as though nothing was going to change.</div><div>
<br /></div><div>A run through Sonic for their fab hotdogs (and a cherry limeade for me!), and then we were off to meet Wren's teacher and see her classroom. We left the school just at dark, and drove anxiously down our street.....are there lights on? Is that a generator? Our neighborhood has a funky arrangement of electricity and just because certain houses are dark doesn't mean ours will be. But the mile-long cruise down our street yielded.....darkness.</div><div>
<br /></div><div>Sigh.</div><div>
<br /></div><div>We fired up the generator and started to get the little kids ready for bed, resigned to another hot night of sleeping, and more fun and games with the breaker panel.</div><div>
<br /></div><div>Then my husband noticed a streetlight on at the corner. We have our generator jacked into the house power, so the main switch was off. He ran downstairs and flipped off the generator and turned on the main....and there was LIGHT!!</div><div>
<br /></div><div>We let the little kids watch cartoons until 10pm, while we waited for the hot water heater to do its job. Hooray for electricity and modern conveniences!!</div><div>
<br /></div><div>(this means that I can now return to art-related posts! And I will show you what I made in the dark, while wearing my husband's LED headlamp!)</div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-76323073407864113002011-08-30T08:25:00.002-04:002011-08-30T08:31:55.961-04:00Power-LessHey everybody...<div>
<br /></div><div>Just wanted to let all know that we have been without power since Saturday afternoon because of Hurricane Irene. I'm writing this while the generator runs our router so at least we have brief periods of internet. most of my internet time involves Facebook so I can keep up with news and friends, and obsessively refreshing the Dominion Virginia Power outage update pages so I can find out when we might have power back.</div><div>
<br /></div><div>Also in the last few days, my oldest daughter turned 13 and I threw a party for her, in the dark (more on that later). Now that that is done, I can turn my attention to other things, like searching the area for power crews working on fixing lines, and cleaning out my fridge and freezer. :)</div><div>
<br /></div><div>I'll be back soon!</div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-88042447946217043312011-08-18T16:10:00.007-04:002011-08-18T21:42:14.525-04:00Bead Soup has arrived!<div>I love getting packages in the mail, especially when they contain such wonderful goodies as what my Bead Soup Blog Party partner, <a href="http://elizabethcreates.blogspot.com/">Elizabeth</a>, sent me!</div><div>
<br /></div><div>Check THIS out:</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_ddaLJXY13NyGceosuFYrspnuQmVB4P-dHYpO_zlt3Zu4NE_bQ3yeT49G5_kYfjad7H_lp4Zj7CWhsgh9ZSaDrR4dr9mcJPCq7mCUl0N_MMe12-MSNQAa3uQWYHGqcE9xLfYeWTFWVz8/s1600/Bead+Soup+collage.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_ddaLJXY13NyGceosuFYrspnuQmVB4P-dHYpO_zlt3Zu4NE_bQ3yeT49G5_kYfjad7H_lp4Zj7CWhsgh9ZSaDrR4dr9mcJPCq7mCUl0N_MMe12-MSNQAa3uQWYHGqcE9xLfYeWTFWVz8/s400/Bead+Soup+collage.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5642368740788105538" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 241px; " /></a>There are SO many gorgeous beads in this Soup!! Beads made from recycled glass in Tanzania, a gorgeous focal from a fellow Virginia glassworker, <a href="http://www.artoftheswamp.com/">Linda Campbell</a>, freshwater pearls, shells, glass beads with gorgeous finishes....the minute I opened the box and saw the beautiful goodies, I immediately had about a zillion ideas! I'm working out the logistics on the vision in my head right now.<div>
<br /></div><div>I certainly hope the Soup I sent to Elizabeth is inspiring to her, too. Here's what I sent:</div><div>

At least, I hope so!</div><div><div>
<br /></div></div><div>This is going to be SO MUCH FUN!!!</div><div>
<br /></div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8133261135920508206.post-91477770387336904832011-08-13T21:26:00.004-04:002011-08-13T22:07:20.138-04:00Puzzles and Works in ProgressFirst, I want to direct your attention to a wonderful podcast I was listening to in which <a href="http://voodoonotes.blogspot.com/">Rice Freeman-Zachery</a> interviews <a href="http://sharilynmiller.blogspot.com/">Sharilyn Miller</a>. The podcast is <a href="http://hw.libsyn.com/p/5/c/3/5c35c7f3ee38ac73/Sharilyn_Miller_podcast.mp3?sid=90c2fa8fc875d859963d16872880d64f&l_sid=22935&l_eid=&l_mid=2682500">at this link</a>. She talks a lot about herself and her work, but also offers some really interesting insights. Personally, I love her work, so I am always eager to read and listen to anything I can about her and what she is doing. Someday, I would love to go to one of her <a href="http://wildwirewomenretreats.blogspot.com/">Wild Wire Women retreats</a>.<div>
<br /></div><div>****************************</div><div>Somehow, today I have been able to get a few things done in the workshop. I have a long (LONG) list of 'stuff to make', and things I want to try out, so whenever I get some time to create, I never feel like I get enough done. Not to mention the fact that I have to shift between workspaces all over the house (metals in the garage, beading in the office, anything with water in the kitchen...). But I did get a few bits of copper enameled, some washers hammered and heat-patinated, and a decent start on some wire wineglass charms.</div><div>
<br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGheDvWDoE8mxp4OrNdQJ2T4vQo-MgZjzhrZVUsDe2CPmoZ5b19goyt6KcEc8U9dwd26Hb_0gRey4PVzvrsEAOOMNLnu8UALyIZ0s3-WGLM_a386j_DqxLRUBI-KMjU1CRsqhsIzrBTnQ/s1600/001.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGheDvWDoE8mxp4OrNdQJ2T4vQo-MgZjzhrZVUsDe2CPmoZ5b19goyt6KcEc8U9dwd26Hb_0gRey4PVzvrsEAOOMNLnu8UALyIZ0s3-WGLM_a386j_DqxLRUBI-KMjU1CRsqhsIzrBTnQ/s400/001.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5640527182018362066" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px; " /></a><div>
<br /></div><div>It's those wineglass charms that have been giving me the puzzling issues. I know in my mind's eye what I want them to look like, but getting there is....well, most of the fun, but still seriously taxing my engineering skills. I'm not even sure how much of a market there will be for them, but there are two wineries that are vendors at the market I am doing, so maybe I'll actually sell some. But first, I have to make some that work right.</div><div>
<br /></div><div>But I'm always grateful for some time to make things, even if I wish I could work faster or make more things. :)</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2Nec5sMwrWy5OsuUK98ImWeUp-4UsJ1jp5lgOC7F3KRMnENUiClX_wK5tTV3c5FOACYg0J3aFSAMUjOdtQM2SjZulxEJ7J64bBrIsX8Go9AjTm9IgvWUvY6oTSJXByE70l2m5X6gjeTU/s1600/003.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2Nec5sMwrWy5OsuUK98ImWeUp-4UsJ1jp5lgOC7F3KRMnENUiClX_wK5tTV3c5FOACYg0J3aFSAMUjOdtQM2SjZulxEJ7J64bBrIsX8Go9AjTm9IgvWUvY6oTSJXByE70l2m5X6gjeTU/s400/003.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5640527188280423426" /></a><div>What are YOU making?</div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04096488417846275728noreply@blogger.com2
